A MEMORIAL HONORING THE FIRST BLACK PRINCIPAL IS UNVEILED IN THE GREENWOOD DISTRICT

Pillars honoring Ellis Walker Woods, the first Black principal of the first Black high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma was unveiled this month. Each pillar showcases the accomplishments of the graduating classes under E.W. Woods’ tenure as principal.

The memorial sits on the original location of the historic Booker T. Washington High School. That site is now part of Oklahoma State University’s Tulsa campus.

The memorial is in remembrance of E.W. Woods’ dedication to the community. Woods housed African American children at the high school in 1921 during the Tulsa Race Massacre. This commemorative site is part of what will be the 100-year anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The memorial depicts the resilience, the determination, and the successes of the African Americans who attended the Booker T. Washington High School.
